Holding Is Healing: What It Means in NUCCA Care

Small adjustments, Big results

When patients first begin to receive care with NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association), you may hear a NUCCA doctor say, “You’re holding your adjustment,” and that is excellent news. One of the most important markers of successful treatment that we look for is something called “holding”, because in NUCCA care, holding is healing.

But what exactly does holding mean?

Understanding the Atlas Subluxation Complex (ASC)

First, to understand why holding matters, or what it even is, you need to understand the fundamentals of NUCCA care. And that begins with a quick anatomy lesson.

At the very top of the spine sits the first cervical vertebra (C1), aka the atlas bone. This bone supports and balances the head, which typically weighs 10-13 pounds. Because of its unique shape and position, the atlas plays a crucial role in how the head sits on the neck and how the entire spine aligns beneath it.

When the atlas shifts out of its ideal position, it can create what NUCCA doctors call the Atlas Subluxation Complex (ASC). Even a small misalignment in this region can have a big impact on your overall health because of how it affects the sensitive structures nearby such as the brainstem and pathways of the nervous system.

When the atlas is misaligned, the body often compensates by shifting posture, altering muscle tension, and placing additional stress on the nervous system. This can create a ‘snowball’ effect of health problems such as vertigo, tinnitus, TMJ, migraines, balance issues, and neck or back pain.

Restoring Balance with NUCCA Care

Now that you have a grasp on atlas misalignments, we can explain how, and why, NUCCA works.

NUCCA care focuses on gently correcting the alignment of the atlas so that the head can be centered properly over the neck and the rest of the body. The goal is not constant twisting and cracking of the whole spine, but rather small, precise corrections that allow the body to stabilize and maintain alignment over time.

When the atlas alignment is restored to a more natural position beneath the skull, patients can experience results such as:

  • Reduced pressure on the nervous system
  • Reduced symptoms such as vertigo, neck and back pain, headaches, tinnitus, TMJ and balance.
  • Improved overall communication between the brain and body

Improvements to your atlas alignment can create improvements on the structures that are essential for the body’s ability to regulate itself, repair tissues, and function efficiently.

Why “Holding” Matters

After a NUCCA correction, the body begins adapting to its improved alignment. Muscles, ligaments, and soft tissues gradually learn to support, or ‘hold’, the corrected position.

When the correction stays in place between visits, we say the patient is holding their alignment. The longer the body maintains proper alignment, the more time the nervous system has to function without interference. During this time, the body can focus on healing and restoring balance which is where the phrase “holding is healing” comes from.

Instead of repeatedly forcing change, NUCCA care allows the body to stabilize naturally.

Why Holding Can Take Time

For many people, the atlas misalignment didn’t happen overnight. It may have developed over years due to injuries, stress, poor posture, or accidents.

Because of this, it can take repetition to help the body fully adapt to the improved alignment.

Early in care, adjustments may be needed more frequently while the body learns to maintain the correction. As the spine stabilizes, the time between adjustments typically increases.

Eventually, many patients begin holding their alignment for longer periods—sometimes weeks or even months. Remember, real healing is a journey, not a moment.

The Goal: Long-Term Stability

The ultimate goal of NUCCA care is stability. When the atlas remains properly aligned and the head is balanced over the spine, the body can function with less strain. When that alignment holds, the nervous system is under less stress, circulation between the brain and body is more efficient, and communication between the two can occur without interference or issues.

NUCCA is not about never-ending quick fixes or temporary treatments- its about the slow and steady journey to win the proverbial race. In NUCCA, we want to help improve your life, not just your day.

That’s why in NUCCA care we often say:

When the body holds its alignment, it has the opportunity to heal.

And in many cases, holding truly is healing. Contact our office to learn more!
